The Bershtein Law Center is a family-owned and operated firm that has been serving the Greater New Haven community for generations. The firm’s roots reach back to 1955, when Herman S. Bershtein, a lifelong Hamden resident, saw the people around him struggling to afford adequate legal assistance. After returning from serving our country in World War II, Herman attended law school in hopes of providing members of his community with competent and affordable legal representation. After finishing law school, Herman began practicing law out of his mother’s convenience store at 1188 Dixwell Avenue in Hamden, where the main office still remains, committing himself to helping defend and protect the least powerful citizens of Greater New Haven.
When he first started and was building a name for himself, Herman S. Bershtein relentlessly fought for the citizens of Greater New Haven by taking any and all types of cases. Over the years, he has focused his passion in the legal profession on representing victims of personal injury accidents by not only fighting for his clients against conglomerate insurance companies, but by also becoming a pillar of the community by providing emotional support for families enduring extremely difficult circumstances. Further, Herman has also preserved the rights of the members of his community with his expertise in real estate and probate law.
Herman passed his beliefs on to his children, Richard, Jan, and Joy, as the progression to follow in their father’s footsteps and provide passionate, professional legal representation was a natural one. As the generational trend continues, Herman’s grandson, Marc Cafasso, is compelled to follow his grandfather’s legacy and become a third-generation attorney in the Bershtein Law Center, as he anticipates graduating from law school in May 2021, and returning to the family firm.
To this day, 95-year-old Herman is still practicing law, and works seven days a week alongside his children, Jan, Richard, and Joy, and his grandson, Marc, hopes to continue his family’s legacy by representing the people of Greater New Haven for decades to come. The Bershtein Law Center has always been, and will forever be, a client-driven law firm committed to the family history of integrity, compassion, excellence when representing our clients.
